Tesla Road Trip Planning: How to Use Superchargers Like a Pro

Road Trips Are Easier Than You Think

Tesla’s Supercharger network and built-in trip planner make it straightforward.

Let the Car Plan

Enter your destination. The car automatically routes through Superchargers, calculates charge times, preconditions your battery, and adjusts for speed/elevation/weather.

How Supercharging Works

  1. Pull in and plug in — no apps, no cards. It recognizes your car.
  2. Charging starts immediately, bills to your Tesla account.
  3. Unplug when you hit your target.

The Speed Curve

Fastest between 10–50%. Slows above 80%. Practical rule:

  • Arrive at 10–20%
  • Charge to 60–80% (not 100%)
  • More short stops beats fewer long stops

Typical Times (V3 Supercharger)

  • Model 3 LR: 10%→80% in ~25 min
  • Model Y LR: ~27 min
  • Cybertruck: ~35 min

Pro Tips

  • Use abetterrouteplanner.com (ABRP) for detailed planning
  • Know the next Supercharger beyond your planned stop
  • 65 mph vs 80 mph = 20% more range
  • Winter: budget 25–35% less range
  • Start early on holiday weekends to avoid busy stations

Etiquette

  • Move your car when done — idle fees apply ($1/min at busy stations)
  • Don’t charge to 100% at busy locations
  • Use unpaired stalls for full speed
